Quality transit service is at the heart of fostering livable, sustainable and economically vibrant communities. GCTD forecasts in order to meet the growing transit needs of western Ventura County, fleet needs will reach 125 vehicles within 30 years. With GCTD’s existing aging facility located in a residential neighborhood and utilized beyond its design capacity, there is no room for future expansion at the current site.
Through the improved transit capacity this facility provides, the community GCTD serves will have greater access to jobs, school, medical services and more. The facility will enable GCTD to fulfill its mission “To provide safe, responsive, convenient, efficient, and environmentally responsible public transportation that serves the diverse needs of our community.“
The facility will enable GCTD to provide lasting green job opportunities in the operations and maintenance of transit service helping our local work force and economy. The construction of the new facility will also create 380 construction jobs.
GCTD strives to be a leader in sustainable transportation service. With that in mind, the new facility was designed in a way that will minimize life-cycle costs and energy usage throughout its delivery. A commissioning process will validate the systems’ energy and environmental performance goals. GCTD has instituted sustainable opportunities, such as all California Green Building standards, as well as other environmentally sensitive construction opportunities that offer the greatest potential for initial capital and long-term operating cost savings, as well as those that can be maintained and preserved through a maintenance program.
Buildings will employ energy efficient lighting that is controlled and will reduce intensity when allowable to save energy, low-flow water fixtures, day-lighting for office areas and bus maintenance bays, and other cost effective environmentally sensitive features. The new facility will also be positioned and designed in such a way that will take maximum advantage of the sun and wind, helping to decrease lighting, heating and air conditioning costs. As the new facility will use 100% LED lighting, the costs will be comparable to the lighting costs at the current facility, even though it will be three times in size.
